about
TL;DR version:
12-tones, synth drums, mix.
Longer version:
With this piece Cardboard Volcano further explore the 12-tone compositional device whilst using the most basic VSTi Reaper had to offer (ReaSynth and ReaSynDr).
The drum part was created by importing MIDI drum loops from the library in MT Power Drum Kit. An arrangement was created and imported into the MIDI sequencer. That drum kit VSTi was then replaced by ReaSynDr and the MIDI sequence amended to trigger the four sounds available in ReaSynDr (named Blip, Tick, Kick, and Snare). Each sound was expanded out to separate tracks then processed and panned to an area on one side of the stereo field. The tracks were duplicated, processed slightly differently and panned to the corresponding other side of the stereo field. The relative mix levels between the multiple synth drum tracks were automated to create a shifting balance which, because of the duplicate-panning, is manifest as motion in the stereo image.
The 12-tone row was constructed as a series of major triads beginning on E and descending chromatically through Eb to D. This was harmonised against a 12 note arpeggio starting at C and ascending in alternate major thirds and perfect fifths - C-E-G-B-D-F#-Bb-C#-F-G#-C-D# - but remaining within the same octave. Further harmonic interest was created by processing this track through a self-oscillating JavaScript LoFi delay.
